It's the moment that game developers around the world have been waiting for...DoW's favorite games of 2008! We did an informal poll in our forums, and our members responded with feedback on their favorite games that came out in 2008. The only criteria to make unofficial DoW list below is that it had to get more than 1 vote. Also note that our members have multiple games in each category on their personal lists.
Favorite Games of 2008:
1. Left 4 Dead - This was far and away the game that got the most votes. The great co-op play which provides plenty of laughs was the DoW favorite for 2008. It's the zombie apocalypse, and you can bring friends!
2. Fallout 3 - A few of us lost many hours to the post-apocalyptic open world RPG.
3. Far Cry 2 snuck in on a few of us and turned out to be a worthy title for a handful of our members, despite some gripes with the game design.
4. Dead Space got a few honorable mentions to round out our list.
Most Disappointing Games of 2008:
Really the only game that got more than one vote was Call of Duty: World at War. The game just failed to mobilize and capture the community the way CoD4 did, which is why it receives our most disappointing game award.
Favorite 2007 Games played in 2008:
One more category worth mentioning were the games that came out in 2007 that DoW members continued to enjoy in '08. CoD4 makes the list here, as it saw its peak of competitive play during the year for many of our members. Also list-worthy would be UT3, specifically in the form of the editor, which still keeps a few entertained, despite the fact that the core UT3 game unfortunately would have made many's most disappointing list in 2007. Lastly in this category, Team Fortress 2 got some mentions, and if you count the number of updates provided by Valve during the year, this game stayed fresh in 2008.
Fun Worthless Stats:
Using the Xfire Clan Stats, which are
highly inaccurate and underestimated, since not everyone signs in to Xfire when playing a game, tells us how much time our members have wasted.
1. CoD4: 4,820 hours
2. UT3 / UT3 Editor: 1,372 hours
3. Left 4 Dead: 528 hours
And of course the lifetime achievement award goes to UT2004, with 18,038 hours wasted! That comes about to be just short of 752 days!!!
That's it...now we'll see what 2009 has in store for us.
